This introductory course covers the fundamentals of poetry, including terminology, forms, and techniques. Students learn how to read, analyze, and appreciate poetry, as well as how to write their own poems. Topics may include sonnets, haiku, free verse, imagery, metaphor, and rhyme.
This intermediate-level course builds on the skills and knowledge gained in Poetry 101. Students delve deeper into the analysis of poetic form and language, as well as exploring the historical and cultural context of poetry. Topics may include the works of particular poets or movements, such as the Romantic poets or the Harlem Renaissance.
In this advanced course, students continue to hone their craft as poets and literary analysts. The curriculum may focus on a particular theme, genre, or time period, such as the poetry of war or the modernist movement. Students also develop their skills in critiquing and providing feedback on each other's work.
This course explores the intersection of poetry and other art forms, such as music, visual art, or film. Students examine the ways in which poets have been inspired by other forms of expression, and how they have influenced those art forms in turn. Students may also create their own interdisciplinary works.
In this course, students focus on the craft of editing and publishing poetry. They learn how to refine their own work, as well as how to submit and publish their poems in literary journals and other outlets. The curriculum may include guest speakers from the publishing industry and opportunities to work with literary editors.
This capstone course allows students to explore a self-directed project in poetry, such as a chapbook, a long-form poem, or a multimedia work. Students will work closely with Monica Salazar to develop their project and present it to the class for feedback and critique. The course also includes a comprehensive examination of the history and future of poetry as an art form.
